“Core competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deep learning and life-long learning” (B.C. Ministry of Education, 2014).
At Q’shintul/Mill Bay Nature School, our image of children is that they are capable, curious, creative, inquisitive, thoughtful, considerate, loving. They do not come to us with lack. They come to us as sacred beings with incredible strengths – and our deep and abiding responsibility is to nurture each one in the ways he/she/they need. Just like flowers – Spaqm – each is unique and beautiful.
At Q’shintul/Mill Bay Nature School, we actively aspire and engage in co-creating an ecosystem where core competencies are cultivated in our rhythms, our questions, our expectations, our governance, our use of materials, our relationships, the way we solve problems, the way we take up restorative justice, our centering of children.
Core competencies form the foundation of all future development.
